During 2025–2026, India recorded a critical loss of 120 Kha of tree cover. Translating to approximately 55 Mt of CO₂ emissions and placing the nation 2nd globally in annual forest loss. With nearly 1.5% of stable forest land lost and 9% severely disturbed, driven by infrastructure, agricultural expansion, mining and land clearance for renewable energy.
